Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide and acaricide derived from phenylpyrazole. It is toxic to arthropods after contact with the body surface or after ingestion. It also affects the larval stages of adults in the central nervous system of insects. It interacts with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors that regulate chloride channels. It prevents the transport of chloride ions across cell membranes. Excessive stimulation of nerves, uncoordinated activity of the nervous system and subsequent death of insects and mites occurs. In addition, the effect of ticks is caused by the destructive action on the salivary glands of ticks, which makes it impossible for the animal to suck. Reproductive toxicity of fipronil is noted (irreversible changes in ovules) in female ticks
